How do I password protect my wireless network?

Typically, most wireless routers are accessible from the IP address 192.168.1.1. If you have a wireless router, you should be able to enter http://192.168.1.1 into your web browser and login to your router.

Some of the default usernames and passwords are listed below:

Manufacturer Username Password

Belkin admin Admin
Linksys admin admin
Linksys comcast 1234

If none of these common username and password combinations work for you, please refer to your user’s manual or search the internet for the default username and password for your manufacturer and model of router.

Once you login to your router you can look for something like “Security” where you can set up the type of authentication and your password. After you save your configuration you should now have a password-protected router.

When you connect to your wireless network it should now prompt you for a password. Type in the password you set up and you should be able to successfully connect to your network.

Many common household wireless routers also have several more security features such as MAC address filtering, IP filtering, port blocking, and many more.

Refer to your instruction manual for more detailed instructions as to how to implement these features.
